David Thomas-Jensen, thanks so much for your response. I really tried to craft the piece in such a way to convey that it was the pressure and the rhetoric – not the practice of breastfeeding – was the issue for me. 100%. I can completely understand why this is such a polarising issue. Oftentimes the upset caused by the system is compounded by the guilt and concern women have that they were unable – physically or because of lack of early intervention, support and assistance – to exercise their full range of choices and to ultimately do what they might most want to do, which is breastfeed. I want this article to be a call against the polarisation, not in favour of it, or in favour of one over another. And I think I shall have to write another piece to make that even more clear! Thank you so much for taking the time.
